Canes ‘fully expect’ Svechnikov to be ready for start of 2023-24 season

1 min read

General manager Don Waddell has provided an encouraging update regarding star forward Andrei Svechnikov’s recovery, indicating that the Carolina Hurricanes won’t have to wait much longer for his return.

Waddell shared positive news during a recent interview on NHL Network, revealing that Svechnikov is currently skating on his own, four months post-surgery. While he’s not engaging in contact activities yet, the player’s progress is ahead of schedule. With around six months until the upcoming training camp in September, Svechnikov’s anticipated return aligns perfectly.

Expressing Svechnikov’s eagerness to play, Waddell emphasized the team’s cautious approach. While October holds significance, the long-term aspect of the season takes precedence. Waddell fully expects Svechnikov to be fully prepared as the new season kicks off.

Svechnikov’s last appearance was on March 11, when he sustained a torn ACL in his right knee during a non-contact moment against the Vegas Golden Knights. Following surgery less than a week later, the Hurricanes declared his absence for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

In the previous season, the 23-year-old contributed significantly with 23 goals, marking his fourth consecutive 20-goal performance, along with 55 points in 64 games. He also achieved a career-high average ice time of 18:03 minutes per game.

During Svechnikov’s absence, the Hurricanes faced a sweep by the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Final. His presence was missed, as he has amassed 25 points across 40 career playoff games.
