Mayweather Obstructed Boxing

3 min read

Tyson Fury will face Francis Ngannou on October 28th, followed by a unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk to crown the undisputed heavyweight champion. The fight has been in the works for some time, with negotiations breaking down earlier this year.

Carl Frampton recently weighed in on why big boxing fights don’t happen as often as they do in mixed martial arts.

Carl Frampton argues that mixed martial arts fights are more frequent than boxing fights because fighters like Floyd Mayweather want to keep their records.

After negotiations between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk broke down earlier in 2023, the two sides finally reached an agreement for a unification fight.

Ahead of Fury’s showdown with Francis Ngannou, former featherweight champion Frampton and former UFC star Dan Hardy said on Boxing versus MMA that boxing could learn from the UFC, where boxing’s best fighters are ordered to together to put on great fights in the Octagon.

“Well, I think the problem with boxing is that there’s zero protection,” the Northern Irishman said on “Boxing Versus MMA,” which airs Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. UK time on TNT Sports 2 and discovery+.

“We’ve seen some of the top MMA fighters get involved in some great fights only to lose and then go on to get involved in great fights. Boxing can learn from mixed martial arts, especially the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where top fighters are forced to fight top fighters.

“We’ve seen top fights happen. [Errol Spence versus Terence Crawford was incredible. It was almost a surprise, but it shouldn’t have been.”

Fury is currently preparing to face Francis Ngannou in what would be a huge crossover bout between the WBC heavyweight champion and the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Frampton, on the other hand, is 28-3 in 31 career appearances and retires in 2021 after a loss to Jamel Herring.

The 36-year-old admitted that he was a fan of the UFC and enjoys the exhibition the MMA organisation puts on.

“As a boxer, I’m a fan of MMA. Particularly the UFC, the big fights and the production they put on, it’s unbelievable,” he said.

“But I think the best fights for me in MMA, for me as a casual fan, are when they stand up and they punch and they kick.

“So for example, although we do have some bore-fests and snooze-fests in boxing – Mayweather for example, brilliant boxer, but he did a lot of moving and his fights weren’t that interesting.

“When you get two guys locking horns, punching it out with each other. I don’t think there’s a better spectacle in sport.”
This weekend, Islam Makhachev will take on Alexander Volkanovski in Abu Dhabi at UFC 294 in a rematch of their February bout.

It is set to be a huge clash, with the Australian hoping to exact revenge on the Russian, who currently holds the UFC lightweight belt.

Speaking on whether he thought MMA was more exciting than boxing, Frampton lauded the unpredictability of the UFC but seemed to side on boxing as his preferred sport.

“No doubt it’s an exciting sport, genuinely, and there is that unpredictability about it. But again I’m just thinking about fights,” he said.

“Two fighters, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, went toe-to-toe in a three-round war that was never going to go the distance. Fights like that, for me, are simply spectacular.”
