Senators sign Tarasenko to 1-year, $5M deal

2 min read

On Thursday, the Ottawa Senators officially signed Vladimir Tarasenko to a one-year contract worth $5 million. The deal was announced by the club and comes with a full no-trade clause.

Tarasenko, an unrestricted free agent, had received offers from other teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and San Jose Sharks, as reported by The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford. However, he ultimately chose Ottawa as his next destination.

Last season, Tarasenko played 31 games with the New York Rangers after being traded there by the St. Louis Blues in February. During his time with the Rangers, he recorded eight goals and 13 assists. Prior to that, in the 2022-23 season, he contributed 10 goals and 19 assists in 38 contests with the Blues.

The 31-year-old forward had spent his entire career with the St. Louis Blues until the trade to the Rangers. During his tenure with the Blues, he achieved impressive goal-scoring feats, hitting the 30-goal mark in six seasons, with five consecutive seasons from 2014-15 to 2018-19. His best performance came in the 2015-16 season when he scored a career-high 40 goals. However, his progress was hindered by three shoulder surgeries within 28 months.

Vladimir Tarasenko was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues as the 16th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft.

After signing Tarasenko, the Senators’ cap space is now limited to just $32,620, according to CapFriendly. This means they have limited funds left to sign their remaining restricted free agents, Egor Sokolov and Shane Pinto. Pinto, classified as a 10.2(c) player, is essentially an RFA but not eligible for arbitration or an offer sheet.
